Hibbing Taconite Company (Hibtac) has a long history of also specifying a maximum powder factor (lbs. of powder per long ton of rock) used in blast design. Fully autogenous (AG) mills require feed which includes a percentage of coarse sizes. Early research pointed to an optimum feed of 40% minus 3inch, 20% 3 to 6inch and 40% 6 to 10inch rock.
The rod and ball mills are also in closed circuit with classification systems such as cyclones. An alternative to crushing is to feed some coarse ores directly to wet or dry semiautogenous or autogenous grinding mills (using larger pieces of the ore to grind/mill the smaller pieces), then to pebble or ball mills.
